The lively voice of Critical Theory

The Berlin Journal of Critical Theory (BJCT) is a peer-reviewed journal, published in both electronic and print formats by Xenomoi Verlag in Berlin. Our mission is to focus on the critical theory developed by the first generation of the Frankfurt School, while extending its insights to address contemporary issues. Sadly, many of the concerns and theories from this pioneering generation are overlooked by the second and third generations of the Frankfurt School.

We believe that the early Frankfurt School's theories remain highly relevant for explaining the social, cultural, and political problems of today. However, in some cases, these theories require revision to adapt to the realities of our time. For example, while Adorno and Horkheimer’s concept of the culture industry highlighted mass media's one-sided influence, today's media landscape allows for greater interaction, with many having the ability to respond to the content they consume or to create their own content. Despite this shift, cultural domination through media persists, albeit through new mechanisms. Revisiting and updating the theory of the culture industry is crucial to understanding these new forms of control.

The BJCT seeks to bridge the foundational ideas of the first generation of the Frankfurt School with the challenges of our contemporary world. To achieve this, we have assembled a distinguished editorial board of leading critical theory scholars, committed to selecting original, high-quality articles for publication.

As an open-access journal, all content is freely available without charge to the user or his/her institution. Users are allowed to read, download, copy, distribute, print, search, or link to the full texts of the articles, or use them for any other lawful purpose, without asking prior permission from the publisher or the author.
